    President’s Report

    To:                   ASLA Florida Members

    From:              Kevin White, President

    Date:               April 17, 2019

April is World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM), an international celebration of landscape architecture. WLAM introduces the profession to the public by highlighting landscape architect-designed spaces around the world. This event has been taking over social media outlets all over the world. This year the national ASLA Instagram profile is showcasing the best of the profession from our 49 chapters. The Florida Chapter will participate in the National ASLA Instagram Takeover on April 24th so please join all of our members in sharing these posts. I’ve enjoyed seeing all of the exceptional projects from our local firms that have signed up for our Florida Chapter Instagram Takeover and I look forward to the remaining firms on April’s schedule. Remember to also share the following hashtag and WLAM card on your posts- #WLAM2019. https://www.asla.org/uploadedFiles/CMS/Events/2019%20WLAM%20Card%20v3.pdf

Section Chairs have been busy scheduling proclamations throughout the state. Thank you for supporting their efforts and joining in the celebrations. Another way to contribute to WLAM is by participating in student outreach. Two ways to do this is through FLAA (Future Landscape Architects of America) and/or by using the PowerPoint presentation provided by ASLA national for Career Discovery. Please contact me if you would like a copy of this to use in your local outreach. Our outreach & social media presence throughout the month of April has been unprecedented with a momentum that is reaching far and wide among members and non-members. Thank you all for your efforts in contributing; as we continue to celebrate WLAM.

Many of you are finishing up your submittals for the 2019 ASLA Florida Design Awards. Please have these submitted by midnight on May 3rd https://www.flasla.org/page/designawards  Kellie Moore of Landscape Forms Inc., is doing a fabulous job as our Awards Chair. I encourage you to volunteer to assist her with the daily events. The two jury panels will take place on Saturday May 18th in Orlando and Jacksonville.

Conference registration officially opened up on April 12th! Please register now and encourage your peers to join in the early registration period which ends on June 1st. The Conference Committee and Education Committee have been fearlessly working to secure CEC approvals, handle keynote accommodations, recruit student volunteers, and so much more. You should have already received your copy of the conference brochure in the mail, and I know you are excited to see our lineup of keynote speakers! Please be patient as we make final preparations to obtain CEC approval.

Our ASLA spring meetings are scheduled for May 1-4th. Adam McCollister, David Ferris, Kay Williams, Kona Gray and I will be attending the meetings in Washington DC. Adam, David and I will be participating in the Legislative visits on May 2nd which is the official ASLA Advocacy Day. We will be advocating for the Art of Infrastructure and focusing on: Restore our Parks Act, Water Quality Protection, and Job Creation Act, and Transportation Alternatives Enhancement Act. We are honored to be serving you all and look forward to reporting back to the Florida Chapter.

Please enjoy your upcoming Section events throughout the state and take the time to thank your volunteers. Many of these folks are taking the profession to another level, and the relationships you are making now will last a life time. In the spirit of WLAM and the upcoming birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted, I close with sharing an impressive list of volunteers from ASLA’s 11 founding members:
