This webinar will cover a variety of issues such as ASLA Florida’s advocacy efforts and political activity!  Learn about legislation that passed and how it impacts landscape architects as well as the Chapter’s advocacy efforts to protect and preserve the profession.  Senator Calatayud will present an update on the Legislature’s efforts with regard to affordable housing.

This session will provide 2 Laws & Rules CEU credits through DBPR. Course #0013208

Meet our Speakers


Senator Alexis Calatayud

Alexis Calatayud is a 29-year-old Cuban American advocate for generational economic mobility, representing Miami-Dade’s suburban core in the Florida State Senate. Homegrown in Dade, Alexis has dedicated nearly a decade to advocating for educational opportunities for our children and empowering advocates of education: students, parents, and educators. Alexis’s story is one of consistency and commitment. Most recently, she served as Director of Policy and Programs and Lead Lobbyist at the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). To Alexis, educational opportunity means ensuring every child can achieve the American Dream through high-quality, accessible VPK–12 education, affordable postsecondary programs, and workforce training that aligns with the jobs of the future. Serving the FLDOE for two sessions, Alexis worked in lockstep with the Florida Legislature to enhance student outcomes of Florida’s VPK–20 education system, successfully advocating for historic increases in public education, teacher salaries, school-safety staffing, and developing education laws into a multitiered implementation plan.

Ruthanne Christie

Experienced Executive Director with a demonstrated history of working in the government administration industry. Skilled in Public Administration, Politics, Government, Community Outreach, and Legislative Relations. Strong business development professional with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) focused in Political Science from State University of New York College at Oswego.


Diana Ferguson

Diana joined Rutledge Ecenia in January 2011 as an attorney and lobbyist.  Her practice is concentrated in the areas of environmental and administrative law, regulated industries and government relations.  She currently provides governmental advocacy services for several clients, including businesses, local governments, associations, and non-profit organizations.  Prior to joining the firm, Diana provided legislative counsel to the Florida Association of Counties.  In that capacity, she lobbied numerous environmental issues as well as other local government issues.​


Kevin White

 Kevin White is a Senior Landscape Architect with England Thims & Miller Inc. in Jacksonville, Florida. Kevin received his Bachelor of Science, College of Agriculture, University of Florida and his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, College of Design, Construction and Planning, University of Florida- 2002 (1st graduating class of the 5-year accredited program). Kevin has been a committed member of ASLA Florida for 24 years and has served in various roles including President of the Chapter and currently serves as the Member at Large for Advocacy and Licensure.
