The Miami 2020 Kick-Off was a great success! It was held on Miami Beach at the Host Hotel, the Loew’s Hotel right on the beach and Collins Boulevard. There were over 80 people in attendance with lots of energy. Lots of ideas. Lots of dedicated landscape architects and a few of our affiliate member supporters!
The big picture take-away is that this Conference on Landscape Architecture, here in Miami Beach, will showcase Florida, Florida landscape architects and our cutting edge design solutions in a changing environment. We think of this as ground zero for sea level rise and wet feet from King tides……just saying. The beginning of October will be hot and steamy and so will the conference! As long as we don’t get a hurricane……
It is interesting to note that National typically needs to sign up 6 or 7 hotels to handle the 6,000 attendees plus the sponsors/vendors. This time they have 18 other hotels because of where we are. People will be staying in unique hotels in an area close to the convention center with lots of various bars and eateries everywhere you turn. The beach is only out the back door and never more than 2 blocks away. Don’t drive if you don’t have to. Uber or Lift in from Brightline or the airport. NO CARS NECESSARY. Imagine if you walk over to the Intracoastal side that we might see flooded streets at high tide…….
The call for presentations will be opened to the public on December 10th, and only 6 shorts weeks to complete the application process. This submittal will open for a variety of sessions including education sessions, deep dive sessions, workshops, and field sessions. The field sessions will be a great opportunity to show the diverse scope of work that we have here in South Florida by our local landscape architects. Please contact our Chairs Deena Llewellyn and Ritu Simlai if you are interested and look for forthcoming information information. Remember, only locals can put on Field Sessions! They can be reached through the FieldSessions@ASLAFlorida.org email address. In coordination with ASLA National we will be hosting a webinar with information regarding the submittal process and important dates/deadlines. If you are selected for an education or field session you will receive full registration for the duration of the conference.
